Solar Kiln

What is a Solar Kiln?

At Hillside Timber, we are committed to sustainable practices for harvesting and processing wood. To make the wood ready for you project, we have built a Solar Kiln on our property.

So what is a Solar Kiln? A solar kiln is a type of kiln used for drying timber that harnesses solar energy. Unlike traditional kilns that rely on fossil fuels or electricity, solar kilns use the sun's energy to heat the air and dry the timber, making them more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and higher quality.

Drying Process in Our Solar Kiln

Preparation

The wood is carefully selected and stacked inside the solar kiln in a way that allows for optimal air circulation

Drying Time

Fans circulate the air inside the kiln, ensuring even distribution of heat and moisture, while preventing the development of mold. The drying time varies depending on the species of timber, initial moisture content, and desired final moisture content. A fully loaded kiln will dry all contents in 1-2 months

QA and Final Inspection

Throughout the drying process, the temperature and humidity are monitored, as well as the moisture content of slabs. Once the wood reaches the desired moisture content, it is removed from the kiln for final inspection and stacking in our warehouse

FAQs about our Solar Kiln

  • There are numerous advantages to using a solar kiln versus a more traditional or vacuum kiln. Here are some reasons:

    1. Energy efficiency

    2. The even distribution of heat and humidity prevents warping, cracking, or other defects that can occur in timber dried using less controlled methods.

    3. The solar kiln can be used to dry a variety of wood species and sizes, making it a versatile option for our needs

  • Our solar kiln is suitable for drying a wide range of timber species, including walnut, oak, ash, and many more species.

  • The drying time depends on various factors such as the species of timber, initial moisture content, and weather conditions. Generally, it takes 1-2 months to dry timber in our solar kiln.

  • Yes, the quality of wood dried in a solar kiln is comparable to that dried in a traditional kiln. Our process ensures that the timber is dried evenly and thoroughly, resulting in high-quality dried timber.
